Like a SWTOR Companions guide, I will tell you about which companion is best for any Star Wars: The Old Republic class. Since there are plenty to choose from, picking the right one will mean that you will be able to do instances alone. So which Companion is the best to use?

If you are not aware of what a companion is in SWTOR, it is a NPC that follows you where ever you go. He will fight along-side you, he will take care of crafting and he can even sell your trash loot, where ever you are. So having such a helper like this is really good. Even if some players say that you don't need them.

Star Wars

The first companion you get is meant to complete your own class. If you are a ranged class, your companion will be a short-range melee tank or a healer, or both. You can't really chose your first companion as your quest line will hook you up with one at around level 9. But you will find more as you level up, so you will have to decide which to take with you.

The best companion to take along with you is a tank. Having one that can take a lot of damage is very useful. You can have him tank an elite NPC while you damage him. Even if the companion dies, you will still have full HP and will be able to take him down. In case you don't know which are the tank companion, here is a list by class, including the planet where you will find him.

Jedi Knight - T7-01 (Typhon) and Sargent Rusk (Hoth)
Jedi Consular - Qyzen Fess (Typhon) and Lt. Iressa (Hoth)
Smuggler - Corso Riggs (Ord Mantell) and Bowdarr (Nar Shadaa)
Trooper - M1-4X (Nar Shadaa) and Tanno Vik (Balmorra)
Sith Warrior - Lieutenant Pierce (Taris) and Broonmark (Hoth)
Sith Inquisitor - Khem Val (Korriban) and Xalek (Voss)
Imperial Agent - Scorpio (Belsavis) and Doctor Lokin (Taris)
Bounty Hunter - Blizz (Hoth) and Skadge (Belsavis) and Torian Caldera (Taris)

As you can see, most classes get their tanks as their first pet. For the others, you will have to make do with the ones you already have.

Some say that it is best to get the DPS ones. Well that isn't so unless you are a tank yourself. DPS companion will get aggro very fast and die. That will leave you without a great deal of damage and you will either perish too, or take really long to defeat your target.

I have learned that a tank companion is better from the several beta sessions I have played, including the live game. I just needed to see a SWTOR Companions guide to learn which kit to get for them and how to play them better.
